Martin to have Millwall medical ahead of move from Ipswich

© Actionplus

FORMER Ipswich Town winger Lee Martin will have a medical at Millwall in the coming days after agreeing terms on a one-year deal, NewsAtDen understands.

Martin turned down the offer of a new contract on reduced terms to stay at Portman Road and Lions boss Steve Lomas has moved quickly to line up the 26-year-old on a free transfer.

The Taunton-born midfielder began his career at Manchester United before joining the Tractor Boys for a reported fee of £1.5million under Roy Keane in 2009. He has made 100 competitive appearances for Ipswich since then, scoring six goals.

Predominantly a left winger, Martin can also operate in a central attacking role. He made 37 appearances in the 2012-13 campaign but was informed he did not feature prominently in Mick McCarthy's future plans and opted to move on in May.

Classed as a midfielder. Anyone know if he's left footed?

Will be a good signing. I do believe he is right footed (maybe wrong) ABD his favoured position is behind the strikers through the middle.

Left footed winger ---okish signing not really wanted at Ipswich----Need to bring in the striker and Bailey in midfield. I am starting to get slightly concerned about the length of deals we are handing out.
One year deals and loan signings don't show a great comitment to the future. Not only are we struggling with wages but length of deals now. Of course it could be argued that it keeps the player keen but look at what happened to Taylor.
Maybe I'm being a pessimist but a one year deal means if a player performs, he can be stolen off you--I think on such a deal a player can talk to another club in January

He's a good player from what i've seen but wanted to see a lefty come in to cover the wing position, I know SL is giving everyone a clean slate but just hoping he's not putting too much faith in N'Guessen. Saying that i'm sure Croft will be on the books soon after his week at Warwick.

Croft is right footed but I still have no idea whether Martin is a midfielder or a left/right footed winger.

He is definitely left footed but can play through the middle as well. Lioncall - The length of the contract works both ways. KJ gave N'Guessan a 3 year deal in August 11 and Woolford a 2 and a half year deal in January 13.Far too long in both cases. His mistake with Taylor wasn't as much only giving him a 1 year contract but not renewing it before Christmas 2013 when we were having our good run.

@NICKOLA: Let's hope so. I got a couple of digs when I posted my concerns about us signing Woolford and unfortunately, I think that I was proved right – I’ve never rated him, so I won’t be sorry to see him go.

As for Lee Martin, I think he does have a similarity to our old boy Dave Martin. Does anyone know if they’re related?

He is right footed, and can play on the left/right/center of the midfield. He is pacey and a good dribbler. Looks good!

6 goals in 100 appearances doesn't sound that attack minded. He may be creative I don't know but I would expect that a hand full a season wouldn't be too much to ask for.

I thought this was a good signing, but from what I read, Ipswich fans are pleased to see the back of him. I paraphrase "A wide man who can't cross and can't finish, with a shocking disciplinary record". Should fit right in then!
Seriously I really hope they are just the bitter tractor boys and it's all wrong.

The old adage is 'only sign players who are significantly better than the ones you've already got' and I'd day Martin fits the bill. A creative player with a decent turn of pace and a good range of passing, I reckon he could end up operating just behind Morison and Keogh (or A.N Other).
SL's forgotten more than any of us know about playing in midfield, so I'm sure he'll get the best out of him and if he manages to sign Bailey as well I'd say things are shaping up nicely.

Good signing - a left footed left winger just what we needed and if things go belly up in the middle he can play there aswel.
Would have preffered to see him on a two yr deal though. If it don't work out he walks away for nothing. Guess you can't have it all your own way.

Dunno Luke but I've got a feeling that Croft isn't coming on board. Lomas must know that he needs players in other positions first. For me, I'd like Bailey and Jackson. That tightens up the forward line and puts some muscle in midfield. Then a 3rd goalie and loans from premiership clubs to cover both the full back positions.
Great to be a Millwall supporter at the moment isn't it !

I will eat my hat if Chaplow came to us, he showed absolutely no desire to sign long term during his time with us and I can't see why he would have changed his mind in the Summer. I honestly would forget aboout him, his heart lies elsewhere.

I think the only club even remotely interested in DNG at Championship level would be Charlton. Maybe we could do a swap with them. Can't cancel his contract with the expense that incurs. Much more likely he'll end up on the bench or in the reserves which will get his agent motivated to seek pastures new. Same goes for Woolford. All on lengthy contracts thanks to Jackett. Maybe Lomas could call Jackett and offer two for the price of one. Nice to hope.

I think if we sign Croft as well the most we can hope for is that we can farm out Feeney, N'Guessan and Woolford on loan to lower division clubs in the same way that we did with Mildenhall, McKandawire ,Racon and Batt last season. Woolford's contract doesn't expire unil until July 2015 so I hope we are not stuck with him until then. That really was a moment of madness by Kj considering he only gave Taylor an initial 1 year contract and we lost him because it wasn't renewed quick enough. Feeney was signed in August 11 so does anyone know the length of his existing contract?

It's difficult to judge how any player is going to perform until he joins and works with the team, They are not racehorces. A player may be happy and do well at one club and be the reverse at another. It's all about team work and I am sure SL will be stamping his mark on the team and what he expects from them. Give him time to judge where the strengths and weaknesses are. He may well work miracles with one or two players.

I don't think we saw Woolford playing with confidence, the guy has some ability for sure and until he finds his feet we will not see him live up to his potential. For me the jury is still out on him. You could tell his confidence was down as he never took anyone on and seem petrified to make a mistake which messed up his first touch and made him over cautious, hence all the passing bck to Lowry and not forward. SL would do well to build the guy up and give him a real chance.

First comment, never been soo buzzing for the start of the season!!! SL wasnt sure at first but hes making the right changes. By the sounds of things in the background we were a joke! Theres a sense of profession being re-inserted back in the club. Martin hmm not a household name your throw up in convo but it looks like SL done hes homework and he looks like a wall player. I feel were a top six team in the making, kinda compare to cardiff and swans. One or two big name players and the rest made up of depth and quality. Forde. Bywater. Beveers. Shittu. Lowery Trotter. Henry. Martin. Moro keogh add a right back that davidson striker maybe jackson plus our squad players am think top 6 or 10 COYL

I think DNG, like Trotter had a bad season du to Jackett ! I also think it has something to do with what ever happened for Jackett to sell our top scorer to Forest .... That is when our season went pear, and I think that is when Jackett decided he was off as soon as ......... SL now just has to get these players motivated and decide within the months of July and August, whether or not he believes they can do a job for us or if they are here for the pay !

If we're unsure on a player in his mid twentys is he worth the hassle???? if you think his worth a punt then show some balls and put a two year contract on the table - or risk another disappointment 🙁

@mfcmike: Give him a 2 or 3 year deal and we could end up with another DNG or Woolford.... Taylor situ was disappointing but a 1 year deal protects the club from being lumbered with a crock or someone whos shocking!! Also from a players point of view he's joining a club thats one of the favourites to go down! He might want to see how th team does or even how the club runs before committing long term....

decide which players you want to bring in and sign them up on longer contracts weve got to be ballsey and commit to are players makes me feel the club is publishing its worries about which division we might end up in before the season has even started

Get your point about contracts but Morison was a sound bit of business. Martin can be tied into a longer contract by Millwall if he's worthy after 6 months which is the way I'd look at it rather than from his perspective.
Who would you want as the next signing ?

I understand that, having pulled off a masterstroke by getting Morison on loan, SL is quietly confident of signing Jackson when he returns from Gold Cup duty with Canada.
Leicester signed Kane on loan and he said at the time that he went there rather than back to us because Spurs prefer their players to get experience at different clubs.
Now that AVB's splashed out £17million on Paulinho, Kane's chances of forcing his way into the first team rlook pretty remote so I reckon they'll be looking to sell him and he could be a decent option if SL's confidence about Jackson is mis-placed. (providing the price is right!)
Tom Pope's a decent shout, but we'd have to pay for him and at the moment the policy seems to be geared towards strengthening the squad by signing decent players on decent wages rather than paying transfer fees.
That policy may well net Nicky Bailey and Murray Davidson, as well as Jackson and I think it makes a lot of sense.
The biggest problem we've had attracting decent players over the last few years has been that we pay peanuts - and we all know what you get for that - Woolford and N'Guessan (Cheap joke, both of them might turn out to be all right under SL).
Gradually increasing the wage structure will also increase our chances of keeping players like Fordey wand I'm sure it was a significant factor in Danny Shittu's decision to sign on.
Giving Martin a one-year deal could backfire if he's a success, but SL is totally overhauling the squad and until he finishes that process - after the loan window closes - I can understand his reluctance to hand players long term deals.
Security is important to players and Martin knows if he wants to earn a long-term deal at the Den - or somewhere else - he's going to have to do the business next season which should make him far more motivated than if we'd signed him for two or three years.

I can't remember the last time we had more than one summer target and we got our men...this is a very impressive start to the summer and still exciting players coming in. Who's paying for all this, gotta be JB and the board throwing personal funds in.
