Bywater becomes Lomas' first signing as Millwall manager

STEVE Lomas has made Stephen Bywater his first signing as Millwall manager, landing the former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper on a two-year deal.

Lomas has confirmed that Bywater has been brought in as back up for first-choice David Forde, who he is "hoping to persuade to sign a new contract."

But the Republic of Ireland star was being strongly linked with Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Speaking to the club's official site, Lomas added: "You need competition for places in all areas of the team, and at 31 Stephen is a good age for a 'keeper with a wealth of experience at this level to push Fordey for his place in the team."

Bywater said: "I know David very well from our time together at West Ham and I'm looking forward to working with him again.

"I am delighted to be joining Millwall and in doing so, first and foremost I will be a team player determined to do whatever is required by the manager for the club.

"However, I want to be playing as much first-team football as possible, so I'll be challenging Fordey hard for that number one spot in the team, as he would expect."

Lomas confirmed last week he was looking to strengthen his goalkeeping department amid speculation linking him with Bywater. He said: "Ideally you want three goalkeepers around – a youngster and two more experienced. You need three for training purposes especially."

Out-of-contract Maik Taylor will not be offered fresh terms.

Welcome to Millwall! Decent signing hopefully he stays on the bench so Forde stays, guess this means Maik Taylor is on the way out

Can't see Forde staying now. Bywater offers too much competition. That will mean another 2 keeprs to come in.

NO1LIKESUS, Can't see that as a problem. If Forde stays, we just need one keeper as before. If he goes, then as he's under contract and is also the Republic's No 1 he should bring in a reasonable transfer fee which is used to replace him.
Maik Taylor is 40, was no longer under contract so releasing him was the best move and does put serious competition in place now between Millwall's two senior keepers.

Forde linked with Ipswich? Not a good sign if we're going to lose our best players to other Championship clubs.

@Micky Lions: I don't know about the reported link but Ipswich were in a lot of financial bother not long ago so I can't think that they have the money to lure Fordey there and Its hardly a career advancement is it ?

I think fordey will move on before end of August but depending on who we bring in.
If it looks like we have some decent acquisitions then he may decide to stay also bywater has never really been an astablished no.1 but is adequate cover and of a similar age to forde. Fingers crossed.

All Forde has been quoted as saying is that as his existing contract runs out next year he would like to extend it. Lomas has already said that he will discuss this with Forde so if he is offered say a further 2 year deal then I don't see a problem with him staying. He will only want to leave if we aren't prepared to offer him an extension.
