Posh chief confirms Millwall enquiry for frontman Barnett

PETERBOROUGH director of football Barry Fry has confirmed that Millwall have made an enquiry for striker Tyrone Barnett.

Barnett, who Posh bought for £1.1million from Crawley Town in 2012, is on the transfer list at London Road following a bust up with manager Darren Ferguson.

The 27-year-old was loaned to Ipswich Town last season but made just three appearances before suffering a serious knee injury. Barnett finished the campaign with one goal to his name.

Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph: "I've spoken to Millwall manager Steve Lomas and to their chief executive Andy Ambler, but it's only gone as far as an enquiry. There hasn’t been a bid yet, but they are interested."

NewsAtDen understands Lomas has also discussed two other Peterborough players with Fry.

Cant see us paying anything like what he cost posh, but things are looking up, but I would be worried about his knee thou with our physio's track record of keep players fit and especally when they come back from injury, they always seem to get a recurance of the original injury.

Some good players at Posh, this could get quite interesting depending on who they are after.

This is a joke.......right? Posh wasted 1.1m on this crap and believe me he is pony. ( Ive watched him numerous times) He shows no passion,he can't run and he can't jump, yes he done well at Crawley town in league 2 but he could not cut it in the championship. Totally out of his depth. It's good that we are looking at players but Barnett is no way good enough. There is much better out there for less money posh would likely want for him. Barnett is a League 1 player at best.

I don't think beggars can be chooser, we are a small club in comparison to most of the Championship side's competing for the top strikers. We need to remain realistic with our transfer targets, it will be proven that Simeon Jackson was purely a smoke screen so the board and Lomas could focus on more achievable targets. Like Lomas said in a piece the other day if he cant secure a 25 goal a season man then he will go a get x2 15 goal a season men and so on. Maybe he see's this fella as a conduit for another more prolific striker??? Who knows, not us definitely....

I understand that we need to be realistic in our purchasing of players but Barnett is not a realistic target. posh will want most of the 1.1 million they shelved out on him back. He is proven at championship level to be poor. If he was any good Ipswich would have had 1st option on him and taken him, which I gather they turned down this option. He is not a millwall type player but if we do sign him and he does start scoring and gets the fans on side he may do well, but my honest opinion will be that by Xmas everyone will be saying why did we buy this pile of s*>t

@Benno77: I don't know much about him but what concerns me is the serious knee injury. Players never seem to get their form back after one of those so even getting him for nothing would still be a bit of a gamble with regards to a contract.

@Sealion: spot on mate. Never as good as it was and it would be a gamble. If he was a player who showed heart and wore the clubs badge with pride I don't think his lack of goals would concern me as I know he was giving 100%. But he is not that type of player.

Let's get real - we simply don't have the money to buy anyone who's a proven Championship goalscorer. We are going to have to take a gamble on someone with potential, someone who SL feels he can turn into a 20 to 25 goal-a-season striker. At this stage I'm sure they are making a lot of enquiries, and as Peterborough admit they haven't had an offer for him yet

denslions, If Lomas has earmarked 25 players that he's interested in then news like today is going to leak out. I think Lomas, Roeder etc. will have it down to about 8 players by the end of the week and will make decisions based on their availability/willingness to come to Millwall. I find it quite invigorating that in June we're actually looking for players when traditionally we're fart arseing around. Next week will some breakthroughs and it may or may not be Barnett or Jackson but you've got to admit it's exciting............

I've heard better and more coherent noises from my toilet than I've ever heard from the mouth of Barry Fry. This looks like an attempt to offload an expensive player they no longer want, hopefully Pearson will see the story and step in before we waste our dosh.

Got me there denslions, I never saw them. My earliest memory is a blue and white striped kit and John Jacks in midfield. My Dad wouldn't take me to the old Den until I was 10 so up until then I was techincally a Charlton fan as geographically that was my closest team at that time. My head got turned in 1967-1968 at the Valley when Millwall won 4-3 and I found an affinity with Millwall.
      Never looked back since.

    Sealion,
Oh yes, Kelly was s***. I do remember however one pass he made in his first home game that actually curved around the full back. That was the one and only thing he ever did of note. He pales into insignificance though compared to some I've seen. Michael Marks up front and Tony Tagg at centre half. Christ.

@NICKOLA: Yes we have had many great players here over the years and a good few Turkeys too. I keep thinking about my best team but I just can't get past the keeper, I mean how can you pick between Stepney, Leslie, Jackson, King, all greats. It just depends when you started following the Wall. But the era I recall as the best was the Weller/Possee team when we used to be on the big match with Brian Moore quite frequently. Great football, great crowds. IMO

Sealion & NICKOLA - Alf Ackerman played for us between 1958 and 1961. I watched a few games at Millwall from 1953 and became a regular supporter in 1956 when I got a newspaper round. I saw players like Malcolm Finlayson who went to Wolves, Charlie Hurley (Sunderland) and Pat Saward (Aston Villa) play for us. My best memory though is the 1961/62 season when we promoted from the old Division 4. We finished top and scored 87 goals. Our forward line was Broadfoot, Jones,Terry, Burridge, McQuade. All except McQuade were double figure goal scorers and I think even he scored 8. Those were the days!!

@denslions: I started supporting MFC just afterStepney had signed from Tooting and Mitcham. The kit was white shirt with blue band round the middle. I remember Joey Broadfoot but although I know of Charley I don't know if i saw him play. Tommy Wilson and Denis Johns and later George Jacks used to be football instructors at my old school Forest Hill, which was quite ironic really as all the rest of the school were Palarse fans. We are probably boring the life out of the younger members of this site but its all part of who we are. Its a pity we couldn't continue this over a pint.

Isn't this one of their players who Ferguson Jr wants rid of because he went out on the pop and started fighting bouncers? Just the chap. Tomlin or Gayle would be quality additions, but I'd seriously doubt we could afford either of them.

Can't get too excited about a player with a 'serious knee injury' that forced down his game time to single figures last season. No offence to the lad, don't know enough about him, his attitude, commitment etc, but 3 games ? Not really time to get the flags and bunting out, is it?

My first game at Millwall was watching a great Benny Fenton side including, King, Cripps, Kitch, Burnett, Dunphy, Bolland, Alder, Dorney, Possee, Bridges, et all. Fenton bought in Frank Saul bit clumsy but scored the odd goal. Alf Wood was another shrewd buy- deadly in the air. Great team great atmosphere. 21-24,0000 attendances. Before the establishment crowd started to sanitize the football and the big corporate interests moved in.

By thw way this a great site, glad I joined.

@NICKOLA: Millwall used to kick-off at 3:15 to allow the players to get from the pub to the Den !!!!!

@Peckhamlad: Remember Bolland well, it didn't matter how muddy it was he was the only player who came off the pitch at the end with his kit still spotless.

Talk about drifting off the original 'headline' topic !
Anyway, I think Eamon Dunphy had lovely hair !

@Sealion: However, he'll probably be best remembered for that dodgy team photo. Should've been arrested !

@Sealion: Fenton told Dunphy he had never seen him tackle. ........And Dunphy misheard him.

Reckon Millwall could turn him into a gem. But let's hope asking price is relatively low.

Looks like Bywater is on his way and tomorrow would expect news about Bailey.
Should be an official announcement about Bomber sometime tomorrow too.

The jury seems to be out on Bywater. I think he is a reasonable backup to Forde in case he gets injured but isn't good enough to challenge for the No.1 spot. I would have preferred a younger keeper instead of the older ones like Mildenhall and Taylor we have signed in the last few seasons.
