Millwall linked with Owls goalkeeper amid Forde speculation

MILLWALL are being linked with a move for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Stephen Bywater amid speculation that David Forde is a target for Hull City.

Bywater is out-of-contract at Hillsborough and played alongside manager Steve Lomas while they were together at West Ham. Lomas is in the market for another 'keeper this summer, with current second-choice, Maik Taylor, unlikely to be offered a new deal.

But Lomas would need further reinforcements if Forde, who is entering the final year of his contract at The Den, leaves for pastures new. According to The Sun, Hull, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers are all keen on the Republic of Ireland star.

The 33-year-old revealed last week that he is hoping to hold talks with Lomas over his future, whilst the new Millwall manager has confirmed his intention to offer several key first-team players, including Forde, new contracts.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old striker Charlie Penny has signed professional terms with the club.

I would understand if Fordey was to leave for an established or newly promoted prem side ie Hull, but not a championship side, that wouldn't makes sense...
Pressman worked wonders with him and he was key for us at the latter stages of the season, simile our entire back line was key. I don't think you will find a better keeper in the championship other than maybe Schmeichel who is another Hull target, so speculation is expected. I would be surprised if he goes to another Championship side....

Well if you are not bothered i would suggest you become bothered. Because decent keepers are hard to come by and forde Is as good as we will ever get at this level! You'd really be bothered if you saw bywater in goal trust me he's a pile of s***

Fair play to Fordey. He has been loyal to the lions and who would blame him if he fancied trying his luck in the premier league. He is 33 so fairly young for a keeper. He will have championship years ahead of him but you can't deny the bloke a chance of earning a few quid which will probably be his retirement money.

Be a bugger if Forde left, but Hull will probably be able to double his money so we need a plan B. Not sure about Bywater as a keeper, but maybe some abstract art could liven up the car park: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1314479/Stephen-Bywater-infuriates-neighbours-erotic-artwork.html

We need to strengthen the side, not weaken it. Forde was quality last season both for us and Ireland, so it's really important we keep hold of him.

All the talk of the new managers attitude and speculation over players wanted is all b******* until we see some positive action in the transfer market and come August on the pitch.

Keepers get better as the years roll by, Forde certainly improved last season, I used to heave a sigh of relief, if he managed to collect the ball safely, in previous years. Improve he has for the good of Millwall.
I now hope he stays, but if he selects to go and every player would like the chance of playing in the premiership
Good luck to him either way

Well he certainly improved last year - and let's be honest there was plenty of room of improvement.

He was always a reasonable shot-stopper - and equally had questionable positioning skills, was given to sudden rushes of sheer unadulterated stupidity and should have been chained to the goal-line for every corner.

His positioning is better and he has learnt to let the centre-backs get on with it rather than launch forward, arms flapping like a windmill blundering about like a bull in a china shop. But I still worry every time there's a cross coming in or a shot from distance.

So I reckon he is now about at the level of a bog-standard championship keeper.

If somebody wants to offer serious dosh for him in the last year of his contract I'd bite their hand off..

You forgot to mention that he's also as mad as a march hare, wildly bulldozing through crazy, wide-eyed, static defenders. And probably a whole load more...but made me laugh! Joke aside, I do understand your sentiment 🙂

@bleachy81: bleachy81 If that is the sort of money they may be offering and I do doubt that I am sure both JB & SL would be very tempted to take it for two reasons first it would give them a bigger budget to bring in new players, but if that figure was paid for him every player we went for would have a price increse because of the money we got from his sale.

Secondly JB would possibly use some of it to off set the money he puts into the club to cover our short fall in revenue each year and who would blame him, but if as I suspect Fordey does stay for another year and plays as well if not better than last he may get a move to someone more established club in the prem.

If we lose Forde and replace him with Bywater - that's a step in the wrong direction in my opinion. SL said there is no point bringing in players who are no better than the ones we already have, so I hope he stays true his word and that if he brings Bywater in, he does so as Fordey's back up.

Fordey seems like the type who would prefer to stay and fight - he is settled here and arguably had the best time of his career here, so hopefully he will. He is very under appreciated in my opinion and he is definitely one of the main reasons we gathered enough points to stay in the Championship last year.

@StanLDN: No doubt iny mind that Fordey's improved over time. That is a trait most goalies have. I can't think of any stoppers who were automatically at the top-banana end of the scale, from the 1st minute of their debut. Surely that's one of the enduring aspects of being a keeper...that you mature over time. It's the only place on the pitch where you can't hide behind a bad performance, and any sort of mistake is likely to he magnified. The other 10 blokes can balls-up left, right and centre and get away with it, but not the no. 1... He's been a good servant to us. I don't recall him throwing his toys out if the peaks when dropped him, and Taylor got the nod. If he does go, then good luck mate...but I'd prefer you to stay. Don't know much about Bywater so can't comment.

right then David Forde was having a mare a while ago Mildenhall got in front of him and was doing well until he got injured and lost his place. Also Forde was dropped and Taylor come in and done us proud. No problem with Forde going

Fordey is a 'keeper' in both senses of the word and unless we get big money will be very hard to replace. Never been that impressed with Bywater when I've seen him play and comes across as a bit of a d***.

will the board put their money where their mouth is and match it, or will they say we got a good offer and took the cash.to help rebuild team.
chance for the board to show where they stand in support of sl.

@jim1222: In reality, if Fordey wants to go and if Hull offer him premiership wages there's not a lot we can do about it. The board will have set aside a budget for wages for the entire squad and, with the improvements we need to bring in, we cant spend most of it on one player - no matter how good he is.

Forfey is a good keeper he has kept us in quite alot of games (this year) and with the form he's in and his display against England, he has proven himself as a high quality keeper and if he stays I'll be happy but aslong as we dont let him go for pennys then im happy if we get a new kepper even if its for just in case

Forde has absoulte mares in goal and cant kick or catch cross and flounders long shots, he is a great reaction keeper good at one on ones... so we can get a better..

@bigneil86: Like all keepers in the modern game, he makes the odd mistake but he has become top class in the last year and he has gone from 4th choice keeper for Ireland to take over as No. 1 from Shay Given in that time. Given the choice I'd let the over rated Shittu go before Forde.

@JonnyBanks: I said he was over rated, mostly by our own support, and yes it's just my opinion. I also recognise how important Shittu's contribution was last season and that he had a real Millwall attitude when other players were hiding behind points we gained in 2012. That's the difference, if he hadn't signed a new contract and had have moved on I'd still have that appreciation and wouldn't be telling him to fk off or saying good riddance. Danny N'Guessan, Rob Hulse, players who think they are bigger and better than the club e.t.c. get my vitriol.

Just checked the free transfer list, and if we are having a keeper from Wednesday then I would rather Nicky Weaver whose contract is also up. A few good ones floating about, but you have a choice it seems of aged 20 or late 30's. I seem to recall Brian Jenson always playing well against us, and he's available but 38.

For me Forde is just an ok keeper, One Case Of Stella he is not. His saves against England should have been saved, if any of those went in he would have been criticised imo.

If he goes for a decent fee I would take that gladly. Nothing against the bloke, he is just average for me and replaceable.

So after giving Millwall 5 years of his career and over 200 appearances, with some crucial performances and the odd dip in form in that time, people on here think it's OK to tell Forde to fk off at the peak of his career because of some speculation in the biggest rag in print. I despair at some of the morons that follow our club. What decent player in their right mind would join us with idiot views like this going around the forums. Save the vitriol for players that deserve it, not those that have been a major part of our forward movement in the last five years and an international 1st choice keeper (Westwood had his chance and lost the jersey to Forde).

@JonnyBanks: Read my post again. It has nothing to do with yours or others opinions on his ability, it is to do with the way those opinions are expressed and the lack of respect for players who have served our club well. What the fk St. Ledger has to do with it only you know. If it's a dig at the Irish team, I couldn't give a monkeys, but there are half a dozen plus players in their squad that could walk into the Millwall team, St. Ledger included. IMO (-:

@lion.ie: How is it a lack of respect if others feel that he is not as good as you think he is?

You like him and want him to stay. Others think he is replaceable and would not mind him leaving (for the right price). It's simple.

My point about St Ledger was that getting ROI caps is not too difficult do I think we can use the term International player loosely. I.M.O of course.

@JonnyBanks: It is simple yes, you're missing the point Jonny. If he leaves for the right or wrong price he has my best wishes, saying fk off Fordey and good riddance, that's showing a lack of respect for his contribution and commitment to our club over a number of years. The opinions on ability are irrelevant to the argument.

      @lion.ie:

With all due respect there has been all of one post saying the bloke's head been turned - all the other contrary opinion surrounds criticism of his ability as a keeper. That's a different kettle of fish from your hyperbolic rant about telling him to fk off. You've invented that all by yourself and seen fit to hang some old tosh about people who happen to disagree with you being "morons". If you've got an issue with one contributor then my advice would be to tag your "moron" stuff onto that comment so everybody else can let you get on with it to your hearts' content. No offence.

@The Humble One: OK, I have an issue with you, Jonnybanks and Strood Lion re your disrespectful comments toward David Forde. Clear enough for you. Everybody else, as you have generously pointed out has a level of due respect for Forde's time at the club. Bored with this, go away.

I have had to find my log in for this post as mainly just read!

Forde must not be allowed to leave! Don't care what anyone says, a good goalkeeper is a must in any successful team, he is also a strong character that is also required in the squad.

He had a really good season and you can't blame teams for showing there interest in him hopefully SL can show him it's still worth staying at den with a few good signings!

I think Forde can be pretty good and in the second half of the last season he was, but he can also be pretty dreadful at saving long-range shots and dealing with crosses. To be honest I thought Mildenhall was as nearly good and Taylor was better. I know Forde has improved this year, but if a Premier club comes in with a big bid I think it would be sensible to take the money to invest in attacking players and sign up one of the many decent goalkeepers who are floating around out of contract.

@junkmale: Yes I think I agree with you there. While it would be a pity to loose one of our better players imo his form has been a bit patchy during his time here but has peaked this season. If we can profit from the deal it would be a benefit to the club. But what usually happens is we turn down the larger offers and some months later we let them go cheap.

Steve Bruce is close to signing Allan McGregor from Besiktas so it doesn't look like Fordey will be going there
