POLICE have arrested a 53-year-old man from Enfield in relation to footage of racist abuse at Millwall that was featured in a Sky Sports News documentary on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police say the man remains in custody at a South London police station and also confirmed that his arrest had come as a direct result of the programme.

He has been arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence.

On Tuesday, Mick Johnson, the Met's chief superintendent of the public order branch, said: "Racist language, within football chants or otherwise, has no place within football, or indeed in society.

"Those engaging in such behaviour should be under no illusion they are committing a crime.

“If it is unacceptable outside football then it is unacceptable inside football. We are working closely with partner agencies and all football clubs to get this message across to their supporters."

The Football Association have launched their own investigation into the footage.
